The bonsai garden has had some new visitors lately—hummingbirds! I’d seen them around the neighborhood before, but never this close, never this often. I knew they were fast, but I didn’t expect how much they chatter while they zip around. It’s not just the wings humming; they chirp and squeak mid-flight, almost like they’re scolding me for sitting too close to their feeder.
I picked up a new feeder and hung it from a shepherd’s hook, and I planted bee balm nearby. Between the bright flowers and the red glass of the feeder, it didn’t take them long to show up. Now, while I’m watering or just sitting with the trees, I’ll catch flashes of green and ruby darting from one spot to the next. Sometimes they hover right in front of me for a moment, wings a blur, before vanishing just as quickly.
It’s added another rhythm to the garden. The bonsai are steady and quiet, shaping themselves slowly over the years. The hummingbirds are the opposite—restless, fast, never still. Watching the two together feels like balance, a reminder that the garden has room for both patience and energy.
If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to watch for the wildlife in your own bonsai space. You might be surprised at who shows up!
