John Callaway – Founder of Matsu Bonsai
John Callaway is a lifelong craftsman and dedicated bonsai practitioner with more than two decades of experience in software development and creative design. His journey into bonsai combines a love for nature, patience, and traditional Japanese aesthetics with a modern craftsman’s eye for detail.
Through Matsu Bonsai, John shares his passion for cultivating trees, building handcrafted stands and jitas, and fostering a community where enthusiasts can learn, grow, and refine their practice. His approach blends technical precision with artistic vision, making Matsu Bonsai both a resource and an inspiration for practitioners at every stage.
Our Roots
Founded in 2008, Matsu Bonsai began as a small atelier dedicated to crafting jitas and bonsai stands. Over time, we expanded—from offering handcrafted tools to curating pre-bonsai stock and launching educational resources. Through it all, our guiding focus remains the same: upholding the integrity, discipline, and beauty of bonsai through craftsmanship and shared learning.
