I’ve just returned from another Bonsai Intensive with Boon Manakitivipart. Why fly across the country to for bonsai? Well, it’s a great opportunity to work with a very talented bonsai artist. Also, there are few similar chances to work on high quality material.
Fall work was centered mostly around pines. Needle pulling and thinning is done during the last part of fall to prepare the tree for winter, and for the coming spring.
Junipers can also be wired at this time. This is a great opportunity to thin and arrange branches with the growth put on this past year.
Maples should be cut back and thinned some in fall. A little thinning and trimming helps redirect growth, prevents die-back, and gives you a chance to clean up and review the tree.
Here’s some pictures of just one of the project trees that we worked on. Rory, Foo, Boon, and I worked on this collected Ponderosa pine.
